33rd UAW International Constitutional Convention Report Day 1
He went on to tell delegates that we needed to help win back the House this fall. Tax cuts for the rich, tax breaks for companies such as Enron, repeal of worker rights such as the Ergonomic Standard, and the privatization of Social Security are all items that are very important to working families. We need representatives who will represent our view on these issues. "Democrats created Social Security and we will fight to protect it. There must be a stop to these trade deals that promote a race to the bottom. Workers must be protected and that means representatives who will listen to you. We lost the Fast Track vote by one vote, but we will get another chance at it. We need your help this fall to get that vote and others. We must band together to win back the house," Gephardt added.
Dr. Joseph Lowery, President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference also addressed the conference, praising the UAW for courageously choosing inclusiveness.
Terry Scruggs and Howard Greene listen to discussion.
He spoke of joining UAW organizers a few months ago at the Blue Bird bus factory in Fort Valley, Georgia, facing down the anti-union goons and hate mongers.
The Credentials Committee approved the body of delegates, which includes 576 local unions and 1961 delegates. The debate on resolutions began with a firm commitment to the rights of workers of all races, creeds, sex and nationality. After debate, the resolution was overwhelmingly approved.
