2002 Special Convention for Collective Bargaining
Day 1
Morgan Stanley Consultant Stephen Girsky addressed the delegates, providing an overview of the current market and outlook for the future. He noted that while the economy has rebounded some, there is still trouble for auto companies. Production levels continue to hold strong, while profitability wanes. There are a number of points that are contributing to this. For years, domestic producers have dominated the truck market, and conceded the less profitable car market. This domination was due to the fact that the imports were not in the truck market.

However, that has changed. The import and transplant vehicle producers have turned their attention to the truck market and are making serious inroads in that market. During this period, the big three continued to spend fewer resources on the development of their car production, falling further behind.

The split of Delphi and Visteon from Ford and GM has been difficult on those companies. Analyst suggest that the parent companies remain closer affiliated with these spin-offs to insure their success. Delphi and Visteon stock has waned based on Wall Streets feeling that they cannot grow non-parental business at the rate their GM and Ford business declines.
Following Girsky's report, the business of debating resolutions for contract talks began.

The Resolutions Committee introduced the platform by discussing the direction for contract talks.
UAW members face enormous challenges and significant opportunities as we prepare for a new round of collective bargaining. We are challenged by the continued transformation of the global economy. The relentless campaign by multinational corporations to deploy capital across the international borders creates a vicious race to the bottom.

We are also challenged by a national government that is more hostile to working families than any in recent memory.
We recognize that rising health care cost are a problem for employers and we will continue to work with them to find ways to control health care cost without shifting cost to our members or sacrificing quality, accessibility or choice.
