Local 2195 Secretary
Nancy Coleman retired effective August 01, 2008. Nancy has agreed to work
two days a week the remainder of the year to assist with day-to-day operations
at the union hall.
Nancy went to work full time for Local 2195 in January 1984, and the union
hall was opened the following December. However, her involvement with
the local goes further back than that. She was hired in 1979 by the International
to be the secretary for the group that organized the local union.
“At the time, I was reluctant to take the job because I was afraid
if I worked for the union it would be held against me if I had to look
for another job,” Nancy recalls. However, her initial fears were
soon forgotten
once she began assisting the first organizers. “I even went with
them in 1982 to Detroit to deliver the cards that had been signed, at
which time the local union was certified. It was my first and last plane
ride,” Nancy laughs.
Having worked at the union hall for the past 24 years, Nancy says “I
have seen a lot of changes through the years, but probably I have seen
more changes in the three years since the Delphi bankruptcy than I did
in the 21 years before it. The things that have taken place since the
bankruptcy have been like a new world, and I feel that local leaders have
done everything they could to protect this membership. I have been fortunate
to have worked for a number of presidents, chairmen, and three financial
secretaries, and I appreciate the many friends I have made at this site.
I am proud to have worked for this membership and the leadership. I am
very thankful to have had this good job and to have worked for good people.
I knew nothing about unions when I was hired and didn’t know what
to expect even though my dad was in the electrical workers union at Ingalls.
I had a lot of secretarial experience, but it would have been much more
difficult for me had it not been for the previous union experience of
the first president, Chuck McDonald, and the first chairman, Jim Gabbard,
who helped me set up the office. I have come to find that union people
are good people and good to work for,” Nancy adds.
“I have enjoyed my job, but it’s time to retire. When the
new members were hired in 2006 and I was adding them to our membership
rolls, I saw a particular young man’s name and it occurred to me
that I had watched his mother grow up across the street from me and my
husband, Dewitt. If you can remember the new folks ‘parents being
children, it is time to retire,” Nancy laughs.
Nancy plans to spend more time with family and friends and become much
more involved in church ministries. She and Dewitt have one son and four
grandchildren. Good luck to Nancy Coleman, and thank you for serving this
membership for 24 years!
